Have you ever ended up setting yourself an ambitious objective, only to abandon it a short while later because you were lacking motivation?
As you’ve already seen, this sometimes happens because you invent excuses. You’ve learned how to deal with these excuses, too, in 3 easy steps.
In this article you’ll find out how to create a Vision Board: a simple and effective tool for getting your motivation back once and for all.
You need to know where you want to go
Losing motivation is by no means a rare phenomenon. How does it happen?
It all became clear to me one day at the very beginning of my stay in Singapore, while I was on my way home, around the time that offices in Singapore close for the day. I was trying to make my way through the thousands of people going in the opposite direction along the subway passageways.
I was the only person heading towards the city centre, while everyone else was going the other way, out of town. If I hadn’t been paying enough attention to where I was putting my feet, I could easily have disappeared under the sea of people.
At that point I thought: ‘It would be easier to live outside the city. Then I’d be going in the same direction as everyone else.’
If that were the case, I would be mindlessly following the crowd, letting myself be blissfully carried by other people until I reached my destination, without having to make the slightest amount of effort.
But no. I live in the financial district, in the city centre, so, like it or not, to get home I’d have to deal with all these people, who kept involuntarily jostling me from side to side.
One of them even barged right into me, his eyes glued to his smartphone. How irritating!
However, I managed to get home without letting myself get waylaid by these ‘obstacles’, simply because I had a clear, unmistakable objective: I knew exactly where I wanted to go and why.
New goals… and old habits
This seemingly obvious and insignificant fact led me to think about goals.
Have you ever wondered why it is that some people consistently succeed in reaching their objectives while others throw in the towel after just a few attempts?
Perhaps you yourself have tried a new miracle diet, only to abandon it at the first pangs of hunger.
Or maybe you finally decided to change your lifestyle and do more sport, but after a week you found yourself on the sofa eating those chips you love so much.
Or you wanted to give up smoking for the umpteenth time, but took it up again the next day because ‘you know, things are a bit tough right now…’
Impossible objectives aside, in everyday life it can happen that demotivation and apathy get the better of us.
It’s then that the desire to let laziness take over comes to the fore. You start feeling that you don’t want to make an effort, and you lose motivation. So you fall back into old habits.
So, if you really want to achieve your goals, whether large or small, you have to know why they are important to you.
What is hiding behind your goal?
I’m willing to bet that the desires concealed behind these kinds of goals involve something other than simple physical appearance or health. I’m certain there’s something else there.
Have you ever wondered what it could be?
It might be a desire to finally find your way back to who you really are.
It could be about the satisfaction you’ll feel, knowing that you made it.
Or perhaps it’s about being able to see yourself as self-confident and capable of doing what you say you’ll do.
Setting yourself an objective is not enough to motivate you. You need to know what is behind that objective.
So, pick up a pen and paper and answer these 3 questions:
- Why is this objective so important to you?
- What concrete impact will it have on your life?
- What would happen if you DIDN’T succeed in reaching it?
Don’t just reply in your mind – set your responses down in writing. This way they’ll have a much stronger impact on you.
Once you’ve understood your motives, don’t let them slip away. Immortalize them with a Vision Board!
A Vision Board is a tool for visually representing not only your objectives, but also life as you see it once you’ve reached them.
I created one in July last year and I’ve found it really powerful.
It motivated me, it helped me believe in what I was doing, and it has given me the strength to continue to follow my dreams, even when they’ve seemed too difficult, too big or too far away to achieve.

How to create your Vision Board
Here’s how you can create a Vision Board of your own. First of all, take at least 20 to 30 minutes to identify your aspirations, desires, dreams and objectives. Imagine being catapulted into your ideal future, without letting yourself being intimidated by fears or limiting beliefs.
- What do you see?
- What are you doing?
- Who is there with you?
- What is happening?
If it’s hard for you to imagine your future, identify 3 objectives you want to fulfil for each of the following 8 categories (if you want, you can add more):
- Health and fitness
- Work and career
- Love and relationships
- Family and friends
- Growth and personal development
- Money and prosperity
- Spirituality and religion
- Travel and entertainment
Once you’ve completed this step, you’ll need a piece of paper (at least A3-sized) or a corkboard.
Collect together some magazines you no longer need, of various genres if possible, and get hold of some glue, scissors and felt-tip pens.
Now, leaf through the magazines in search of photos that represent or inspire the objectives you listed earlier, and cut them out.
In the same way, find and cut out images that will generally help you to illustrate your vision and the direction you want to go in.
Alternatively, you can search online for the most meaningful photos for you and print them out.
Look at the photos you have chosen and select the ones that are most representative of your vision. Then stick them on your sheet of A3 (or attach them to your corkboard). It’s that simple – just like that you’ve created your Vision Board.
Using the Vision Board to rediscover your motivation
At this point, you can frame the sheet of paper and hang it somewhere highly visible, where you’ll see it often.
For example, if you put it up in your room you’ll see it every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to sleep.
If you hang it in your office, you’ll see it whenever you’re at work.
If you put it in the living room, it will be there whenever you’re taking some time to relax.
It’s important that you choose the best place for you, where you can be sure you’ll see it frequently. I know of people who have hung it in the bathroom, which also works
The next time you end up feeling lost, confused or demotivated, or that you want to let go of everything, look at your Vision Board and let yourself be inspired!
Recall the deeper meaning of every single photo you see on the board and rediscover the true motives that are compelling you to follow your dreams.
Just as when you find yourself in the middle of a huge crowd that’s moving in the opposite direction to you and you’re tempted to give up, it doesn’t matter how difficult it is, whether you’re moving against the flow or how many resistances you encounter. The moment you know exactly WHERE you want to go and WHY, you’ll find the motivation to achieve your goal, no matter what.
